GeoLatinas Blog: new year, new posts and a recharged team We wanted to make this first post of 2021 a special occasion to thank all the people who have supported us along this journey. In 2020, we started thinking about creating a place to share experiences, science and opinions of our communities, a blog where the voices of historically marginalized groups are welcome. From the beginning, we found amazing support from our GeoLatinas community, we found writers, editors, translators, and readers that support our initiative. Month by month, we feed our blog with beautiful stories that show us different perspectives and amplify the voices of our community. In a short time, GeoLatinas became a diverse and inclusive space, where each entry is a source of inspiration and empowerment. For Angelique and I (Alejandra), the entire process has been full of new experiences, ideas and dreams. We strengthen and expand our team by connecting with Danita, Paula and Isamar. At the GeoLatinas Blog we are always looking to find ways to improve, to be more inclusive and to reach broader audiences. In 2020, we establish new partnerships and we took the challenge of presenting our initiative at the GSA Annual Meeting and the AGU Fall Meeting. We found even more people and initiatives that inspire us, and with whom we hope to collaborate soon. We will continue working hard in the GeoLatinas Blog, and even though we cannot predict the future of our blog, we assure you that in 2021 we will continue being here with and for you, looking for stories waiting to be heard and making GeoLatinas Blog yours. Thank you for being part of the GeoLatinas Blog, for reading, writing, editing and/or translating. Finally, we hope you continue enjoying being part of this journey and want to end this post by sharing our team’s impressions about our blog experiences: Danita: "I had always been interested in publishing blogs and being a volunteer at GeoLatinas Blog I had started to be a Blogger. As part of the tracking system of the blogs, the publishing process has enhanced my administrative and digital skills, working in collaboration with the leaders of this initiative Angelique and Alejandra. I feel very fortunate to meet such professional, warm and enthusiastic people whose positive energy drives more people to belong to this initiative; I admire them very much. We managed to provide GeoLatinas and contributors with a key platform for the dissemination of our scientific and community work, training ourselves as writers, editors and translators. Thanks to the close collaboration of other initiatives, GeoLatinas Blog is increasing visits every time, which I hope will continue to grow. Finally, I want to express my gratitude for this opportunity to grow professionally and expand my networking in Latin America. Let us keep growing together, and even more, let us keep growing our bond of Latino sister-brotherhood!" Paula: "It is always exciting to be involved in a new project and this is no exception. I have been connected by the love and effort that you as a team put into the Blog. It is wonderful to see the results that have been obtained through this effort: more people joining the initiative willing to be part of it. Knowing that people are reading the posts it is satisfying because we are actually reaching the scientific community and we would expect to reach a broader audience post by post. Thank you very much for trusting me and my work, I will continue putting a lot of love in each visual outcome and looking to reflect the writer’s personality and the message it tries to convey" Isamar (our newest member): "Working for the GeoLatinas Blog has been a fantastic experience! I approach the coding group from a data analyst perspective, understanding how our content reaches broad audiences on Twitter." Angelique: "My first encounter with science communication was a year ago, thanks to an international research opportunity to continue studying the use of foraminifera as bioindicators in coral reefs. Part of my responsibilities for the program was to create science content from our graduate student perspective to practice our science communication skills to a general audience. At the moment, I didn't fully understand the importance of sharing my science with diverse audiences. I felt it was more weight in my professional development. But seeing the impact my stories created on non-scientific people close to me, such as my family and friends made me understand the importance, and need to translate scientific concepts and research into a more inclusive language. GeoLatinas gave me the opportunity to continue impacting and expanding my community by creating the GeoLatinas Blog. This passion project has given me hope, projection, and a sense of leadership towards communities in need of inclusive and diverse science content. Thanks to my right hand, Alejandra, and to the work team for working alongside me towards a better future in geosciences for incoming generations. But more, I thank all of our writers, editors, and translators for making us have a north and continue working for our mission." Alejandra (the author): "I never imagined being part of a project that fulfilled my heart with joy and my head with ideas. The GeoLatinas Blog became our grain of sand and the place where I find the motivation to continue pursuing my dreams as a scientist and communicator. The stories that we have shared and the leadership experience that this initiative has given me in these first months makes me feel very proud to be an active part of GeoLatinas. On the eve of our first 6 months and the new year, I want to thank the people who have supported this project, especially our team Angelique, Paula, Danita and Isamar for making our vision a reality. THANKS to our writers for entrusting us with their stories, to the editors for highlighting the best of each story, and to the translators for helping us make this a space for inclusion and increasingly open to all."
