GeoLatinas Coding Group and GeoHackeo Written by Fernanda Triviño & Angelique Rosa-Marín Importance of coding Coding is the action of writing a code of instructions for a computer (as within a piece of software) in order to do a specific task and solve a problem. Some people consider Coding as the “base of the future”, as a tool that allows automatization of any task or process and making it productive. Being aware of the importance and need for coding, the GeoLatinas Coding group has developed various resources that could be useful: GeoLatinas Coding group GeoLatinas Coding group, started in May 2020, aiming to teach through collaborative and interactive virtual sessions the importance of coding in Geoscience and related disciplines. Since then, we have been learning for more than three months from our initiative leaders and founders of the coding group, Isamar Cortés, and Andrea Balza One of the unique characteristics of our coding group is that our sessions and resources are in English and Spanish. Recently, Isamar Cortés, shared an article in the GeoLatinas Blog where she talks about her motivation and curiosity behind this initiative (link to Isamar's post). The coding sessions have been a wonderful and enriching experience for the group of leaders and for the participants. During the last 3 months, we highlight that we have learned coding skills that allow us to advance in our careers and research. In addition, we have made each session full of joy, learning, and promoting teamwork among members of GeoLatinas. Looking to amplify and practice what we learn in our coding sessions, the idea of creating our own GeoHackeo was born. GeoHackeo The GeoHackeo is an event created by the GeoLatinas Coding group, from June to August, 2020 members of our coding group have the opportunity to develop a project in which they have been implementing the knowledge they have gained through coding sessions. The GeoHackeo is for us a way of inspiring, creating, sharing and applying in our GeoLatinas organization everything we have been learning. The code created for each of the projects is being stored in GitHub, a platform that allows generating codes in an effective and collaborative way. Additionally, it allows us to work online which favors the interaction of all members. The results of the projects will be presented to our GeoLatinas community. Likewise, the GeoHacking initiative and preliminary results of the projects developed will be presented at the next annual American Geophysical Union (AGU) conference, 2020, by the founder of the GeoLatinas coding group and the GeoHackeo leadership team. If you are interested in knowing more about the structure and program of our GeoHackeo, you can refer to the following link: GeoHackeo Playbook. Projects’ Description Our GeoHackeo has a wide variety of projects, each of them led by one or two GeoLatinas who work together with other members of the coding group, to achieve specific objectives.
Let 's code! We are very happy and proud of our first coding steps and we want to share with you one of the best initiatives that we have at GeoLatinas and of which you too can be a part. We provide a diverse and inclusive platform to start, learn, and continue to enhance our coding skills. Finally, we believe that advancing in coding processes will make us move forward on a personal level and as a GeoLatinas community since by acquiring these tools we can improve both academically and professionally. About the authors This post is a collaboration between Fernanda Triviño and Angelique Rosa-Marín are co-leaders of the GeoLatinas Coding Group.
